What will it cost to live in Extra Care housing?

It is generally more expensive to live in Extra Care than it is to live in either sheltered housing or to live independently in a flat or a house. This mainly reflects your contribution to the cost of running the scheme, including provision of communal faciities, the cost of support and the cost of care.

People with limited income or who receive some exisiting benefits should be eligible for financial assistance to cover many of the charges. If you currently pay in full for your housing, care and support, then you should be aware of the cost of living in Extra Care.

The actual cost will differ for each scheme but will include:

  • The cost of renting your home
  • A service charge associated with the running costs of the scheme
  • Utility cost - covering heating/hot water and water rates
  • The cost of support / care
